Asantehene Champions New Yaa Asantewaa Heritage Museum Project in Ejisu

Ejisu, Ghana — August 2025

A powerful new chapter in Ghana's cultural and historical preservation is underway as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, leads the vision for the Yaa Asantewaa Memorial Heritage Museum, a long-awaited tribute to one of Africa’s most iconic freedom fighters. Groundbreaking for the ambitious project began in April 2024 in Ejisu, the hometown of Nana Yaa Asantewaa, the legendary Queen Mother of Ejisu who led the Asante resistance against British colonial forces in 1900.

Though construction has seen a gradual pace, the project remains firmly on course—driven by the passion and commitment of the Asantehene, who has publicly reaffirmed his deep personal investment in ensuring that the legacy of Yaa Asantewaa is honored on the scale it deserves.

The new museum, once completed, will serve as a national and Pan-African monument, telling the story of Africa’s Greatest Woman of the 20th Century, her fearless leadership during the War of the Golden Stool, and her enduring legacy in women’s empowerment and anti-colonial resistance across the continent.

The Asantehene’s leadership has brought renewed energy and visibility to the initiative, drawing attention not just from cultural stakeholders in Ghana but also from the African diaspora, historians, and global advocates for women in leadership.

“The story of Nana Yaa Asantewaa is not just an Asante story—it is an African and global story,” the Asantehene noted during a public appearance earlier this year. “This museum will stand not only as a tribute to her bravery, but as a place of learning, pride, and reflection for future generations.”

Vision for the new  Yaa Asantewaa Memorial Heritage Museum

The Yaa Asantewaa Heritage Museum will feature interactive exhibits, archival collections, and a memorial space, offering visitors an immersive journey through her life and times. It also aims to become a hub for educational programs, cultural exchange, and women's leadership initiatives across Africa.

Local support for the project remains strong, with the people of Ejisu and the wider Ashanti Region expressing excitement and pride over the museum’s potential. As calls for African historical reclamation grow louder globally, the project stands as a symbol of cultural ownership, identity, and pride in African womanhood.

Despite the slow physical progress, expectations remain high, and many believe that with sustained commitment from traditional leadership and state partners, the Yaa Asantewaa Museum will become one of Ghana’s most significant heritage sites—a timeless symbol of courage, defiance, and African dignity.
